Favorite Book: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi

"Reading has always been the perfect escape for me. As a young girl, I remember being able to sit with a book all day, eager to find out what happened next. I lost that enthusiasm for some years until I read Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi. I fell in love with her ability to narrate the impact of slavery, both in Africa and the US, so uniquely. African literature quickly became my favorite genre because it allows me to explore the depths of life as an African from so many different perspectives. I'm especially excited about highlighting African women because we're celebrating their strength, beauty and success."

Favorite book (currently): Secret life of Baba Segi's Wives by Lola Soneyin
"I have always enjoyed reading but I love reading African literature because I love reading stories I relate to. I love exploring other African cultures through stories. As Prince Ken Osei said, "the themes of African literature mimic in every sense of the word the true Africa, they may differ from country to country but the stories’ African-ness is always noticeable." There is always a connection or similarity in African stories about womanhood no matter the nationality of the author. "African literature brings into light, the daily life experiences of the average African, from various angles and through different nuances which can be as blunt as it can be."
